HOMES in the outer Melbourne suburb of Pakenham are under direct threat from a series of fast moving grassfires, the CFA says.

The CFA issued an emergency warning for Pakenham and Pakenham Upper over the fires, which are expected to impact on the area before 4.45pm (AEDT) on Thursday.

A CFA spokeswoman said residents near Army Road and Reynolds Road needed to implement their fire plans.

"It looks like we have a collection of small, fast-moving grassfires in that area," she told AAP.

"There are crews at the scene working on the fires."

The cause of the fires is unknown, the spokeswoman said.
